Before You Start Learning To Play, Here’s How To Tune A Guitar With A Tuner
The Basics Of Guitar Tuning
Everything you read on this page regarding how to tune a guitar with a tuner will apply to every type of guitar.
If you’re planing to play your guitar it’s good to always check if it’s in tune, as this will ensure you’ll get the correct pitch from each chord when you’re performing.
It’s very easy for chords to fall out of tune. It can be due to the temperature of the environment around you or the amount of time you spend playing. When it happens you’ll notice the chords aren’t performing at the same pitch as they usually do and the melodies your playing don’t sound the same as the original tune. However, they don’t usually fall out of tune at the same time, so it’s important you make regular checks to each chord so you can guarantee your guitar will be in tune when you’re performing.
How To Tune A Guitar With A Tuner
Most tuners display a needle at the top of their screen to indicate if your guitar is in tune or not. If the needle is over to the left of the screen, this means the note is flat. If the Needle is over to the right of the screen, the chord is too sharp. If the needle is directly in the middle of the screen, this means the chord is in tune.
What To Do If The Note Is Flat: If you play the chord and the needle moves to the left, meaning the note is flat, gently twist the tuner counter clockwise while still strumming the guitar until the needle moves to the middle of the screen and the screen lights up green.
What To Do If The Note Is Sharp: If the needle moves to the right, meaning the note is too sharp, release the tension on the string by twisting the turner clockwise, while still gently strumming, until the needle moves to the centre and the tuner terns green.
Do this with each chord and you’ll be ready to play.
