How to learn guitar chords for beginners

As a beginner learning guitar chords is not always easy. Finger positions can feel awkward, the chords can sound dreadful, the shapes can be confusing, and you might experience cramps in your fretting hand. If you have tried full open chords and you are struggling, try these four string chords instead.

Simplifying the chord will help you get used to some of the chord shapes on the guitar. By being that little bit simpler to play, you can build up your confidence when you strum them. When you feel ready you can try the full chords.

Playing guitar chords, at first, can make your fingertips sore. This is normal. Keep your practice at 10 to 15-minute blocks, this way you will gradually build the strength in your fingers and the finger tips will toughen up.

It takes time, practice and discipline to start being able to strum and change chords at the correct tempo.

Do not focus on one chord trying to get it right. The best way to learn chords is in a progression. Choose 4 chords and just practice moving from one to another, as you get better start changing in time to a slow beat. Don’t worry about the quality of the sound at this stage, just make sure your fingers are in the right position. In time and practice your hand will learn to find the correct position and you can start to speed up.

Once you can play these chords comfortably you are ready to take on some great strumming songs, such as Brown Eyed Girl, Stand by me, 500 miles and many more. Now online lessons will make a lot more sense and you can start learning more complex songs and researching the genre you want to play.
